HBC’s Senior Ministry aims to minister to our retirees and older through the 5 purposes of the church: missions, discipleship, fellowship, ministry and worship. Toward that end, we try to balance our offerings to address each of these needs. Sponsored events include workshops on topics like managing Medicare and caring for aging parents, hymn sings, special discipleship events, or mission projects specifically designed for senior adult participation.
SENIOR ADULT LUNCHEON – Luncheons are held throughout the year. The luncheons are held in the Fellowship Hall. We know our church and community are so much richer because you are part of it and we are grateful for you.
SUNDAY SCHOOL – Fidelis, our senior adult Sunday School class is led by Sherry Miller. This group of senior adults delves into in-depth studies of Biblical books, in addition to using Smyth & Helwys’ “Formations” curriculum. Members enjoy genuine fellowship and appreciate one and ther’s life and faith experience. This group will also venture out into the world with one-day trips to local places of interest like Montpelier, Ash Lawn and Belle Grove Plantation.
VISITATION TEAM – We have a team of members who provide spiritual care to those members who cannot attend church services. The team calls and visits with members who are in the hospital, living in retirement communities or still in their homes. They deliver smiling faces, hugs and occasionally flowers to those they visit to brighten their day. Occasionally our Visitation Team will transport members to doctor appointments, for medical tests or shopping for groceries. Anyone interested can join our Visitation Team by contacting the office for more information.
PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY – This ministry was started in 2006, when Jean Holthaus and a group of dedicated ladies knitted and presented over thirty prayer shawls and lap robes to our sick and shut-ins. This ministry was revitalized in 2015. We now have a group of dedicated ladies who not only knit and crochet shawls and robes, but also stuffed animals which are presented to sick children and placed in our Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes. If you can knit or crochet and would like to join this group, please contact Mary Smith at firstname.lastname@example.org
PLENTI-NINE – A group whose purpose is to promote Christian growth and fellowship through a variety of activities. Participants are individuals from Harrisonburg Baptist Church, most are retired, but there are no age restrictions. The only requirements for participation are some free time, an inquiring mind and a willingness to share in costs. Quarterly dinner meetings provide an opportunity for planning a variety of events. The group has traveled to locations such as Myrtle Beach, SC; Lancaster, PA; Winchester, VA; Richmond, VA; the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum at Dulles; and Peaks of Otter. Interested members read and discuss several books each year, and there are occasional picnics and hikes. Everyone is welcome to participate!
